Default T-5 Internet Myth: The Mustang 4-cyl. and V8 Input Bearing Retainers are the same

    T-5 Internet Myth:
The Mustang 4-cylinder and 8-cylinder Input Bearing Retainers are the same.

From the outside, the retainers appear the same. A 4-cyl T5 transmission will fit a Fox V8 car with the proper pilot bushing/bearing in the crank. The throwout bearings are the same, and there is no need to consider the retainers to be different when swapping whole transmissions.

BUT, these front bearing retainers are not interchangeable!

From the inside, the retainers are different. The 4-cylinder input shaft uses a larger bearing than the V-8 input shaft and therefore the pocket for the race is larger and deeper for the 4-cylinder version of this retainer.

So, in repairing or rebuilding a 4-cylinder T-5 it is important to know that this retainer for a 4-cylinder is different from a V-8.

Unless someone has a source of parts that I don't know about, the 4-cylinder retainer is unavailable as a replacement part. After all, they have been out of production for what is approaching 20 years now!

Here are the specifications for the bearings on the input shafts:
Again, some parts listings fail to differentiate between the two.
Some parts suppliers will even mistakenly provide the V-8 bearing for a 4-cylinder rebuild kit.

    V-8 Input shaft bearing:
    Bearing: LM48548
    Race: LM48510

    4-cyl Input shaft bearing:
    Bearing: M88048*
    Race: M88010*
    * This bearing and race are also used on the T-45 and the TR3650.

Below is a photo of a 4-cyl. retainer (left) and the V-8 retainer (right).
The respective bearing races have been removed and are placed in front.
The fact that the 4-cylinder race is larger is readily visible.

Also notice the wear, or "galling" on these two retainer sleeves. The fact that these aluminum retainers wear and cause the clutch to bind gives reason to upgrade to one with a steel sleeve.

The pilot bearing you use for a 4banger 5spd to fit a 5.0 is a 83 diesel bearing

    Yes,
83 Ford Ranger with a 2.2l diesel seems to be the specific model of pilot bearing needed to adapt a 4-cyl type T5 to a 5.0 engine.

I have the 4banger 5spd swap done right now.had it for a couple weeks and it seems to be holding up good other than the gears being low and the fact that I have 4.10 gears in the rear.1st gear is pretty much useless.you also need the v8 bell housing,v8 clutch cable
